Disconnect from the internet temporarily, add the Contact, then reconnect.

Create the Contact first as an iCloud contact on the Mac, copy that new Contact card to the Gmail account, then delete it from iCloud contacts.

(Maybe not the most elegant solution, but this is the option I have been using - and it saved my sanity when I discovered the problem.)

Create new Contacts using your iPad or iPhone and these then sync back to the Mac, where you can then edit the Contact Card to your heart’s content.I checked the Apple support forums and there’s lots of reports of the same issue. It seems I’m not alone in having this problem.

We use a Gmail account for our shared business contacts and the issue seems to be related to Gmail accounts. I can edit existing Contact records, but I just cannot create them on my Mac.
